Abstract
The Hungarian indigenous species, among others the indigenous chicken breeds, are part of our cultural heritage. These species are also representing an important genetic reserve for the producing stocks, due to their diversity and ability to cope with local environment. In the light of these facts, it is not surprising that the importance of animals and stocks with rare and valuable traits is increasing throughout Europe’s poultry breeding. So conservation is not only our duty, but it is our interest. The poultry gene bank of the Institute for Small Animal Research is serving this purpose. In our tender we intend to determine the genetic diversity of six indigenous poultry species (Transylvanian naked neck varieties, yellow-, white- and speckled Hungarian types) with the help of molecular markers using the most modern techniques to identify their polymorphism in SNP, microsatellite loci ad in the mitochondrial cytb gene. Additional aim of the project is to create an up-to-date sperm bank in order to insure the long term and safe conservation of male gametes of indigenous Hungarian fowl species.
