Abstract
Snow crab is a new species in the Barents Sea and the fishery in this area has shown a potential to be profitable. However, in the past couple of years, there has been no profitability in this fishery. One major reason for this is that the fishing fleet has received a ban on fishing on rich fishing fields in the "loophole" and been referred to new fishing fields in the Svalbard zone which so far have given lower catches per unit effort. Development of an offshore fishery under demanding conditions requires new innovations and adaptations in fisheries technology, deck-equipment and processing lines. The main challenges in snow crab fisheries are low capture efficiency and an on-board processing that requires a lot of manual work. The CrabTech II project will focus on increasing efficiency and sustainability in several aspects: The efficiency of capture, more environmentally-friendly fishing gear with focus on developing a new snow crab bait system, automated quality sorting and total utilization of the raw material.
