Abstract
In this project we will investigate the possibilities for developing a direct payment mechanism, based on consumer coalitions which directly pay farmers for providing ecosystem services and conserving biodiversity on their land. Coalitions are formed on the basis of consumer preferences for ecosystem services and contribution levels are determined using a matching mechanism which is expected to increase contribution size. Combining game-theoretical and experimental methods we analyse the stability of these coalitions and test whether contributions can be enhanced. The project pays specific attention to consumer types and the behavioural aspects of voluntary cooperation in the financing of public goods.
