Abstract
Wetlands host a large amount of characteristic biological diversity ("biodiversity") present in the Netherlands, which is under severe pressure from economic activities. Integration of knowledge from " different sciences is needed to study general policies and specific management strategies that offer scope for restoration and preservation of biodiversity in wetlands. This project aims to develop a spatial-economic model for the Vechtstreek in the Netherlands for studying the combined biodiversity and economic impacts of land use and water management scenarios. The project will devote attention to the conceptualization of the relationship between biodiversity and human activities in a spatial context, and the analysis of policy instruments for restoration and preservation of biodiversity in wetlands. In addition, it will develop a spatial economic model with physical and monetary dimensions. The modeling is aimed at describing the physical dimensions ( environmental pressure ) of, and the interaction between the various, economic activities in the area. In this context the links between biodiversity change, recreation, and the rest of the local economy will receive particular attention. The resulting model will be analyzed with numerical simulation and optimization techniques.
