Abstract
The discrepancy between the crucial role of the detritivorous community in global element and energy cycling and the poor understanding of the chemical-ecological interactions at the sediment-water interface needs to be solved in order to improve water quality, ecosystem functioning and services and student awareness. By developing an integrated ecological and ecotoxicological assessment methodology, we elucidate the relationship between sediment contamination, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. This methodology will be developed by combining field and laboratory experiments. Part of the field work will be performed by students to enrich their ecological knowledge and to develop environmental awareness and academic skills.
