Abstract
Marine fungi are potential, but understudied degraders of synthetic plastic. Mangrove ecosystems have high fungal diversity, and large amounts of plastic accumulate in coastal zones, such as mangroves. This combination makes mangrove ecosystems a potentially rich source of potential plastic-degrading fungi. This NWO XS project, will generate new data on how marine fungi break down plastics in the marine environment, plastic degradation and the overall fate of marine plastic.
