Abstract
From the very beginning, our Institute has been committed to providing as much information as possible on the items stored. For decades, a lively research work was carried out, a self-published journal Agrobotanika and numerous publications were published. However, in the absence of financial support, the research department ceased its activities.Meanwhile, similar institutions abroad continued to study and research the genebank materials. In view of our internationally significant collection, we have started to fill this gap with the Genetics Laboratory, which was launched two years ago. This was also necessary because the basic principle with regard to genebank samples is that, if not necessary, the maintaining institution will not release them for understandable reasons. Based on our mission, we are not a research institute in the classical sense. By extending our gene bank, we can build up a substantial background database that can serve as a basis for research collaborations and high-quality scientific results. Having access to a diversity of plant material that no other research institute has access to, our results can be of international significance.
