Abstract
One of the most dangerous disease of potato is late blight caused by the pathogen Phytophtora infestans (Mont.) de Bary. In the protection against late blight the most environmental-friendly and most stable solution is the breeding for resistance. Recently in addition to the traditional breeding methods, molecular genetic techniques, having the goal to investigate genes providing races specific resistance came to the front. Investigation of the resistance in variety White Lady - bred at Keszthely - is very timely, because the variety as a mother line plays a major role in current breeding programmes and presumably carries the rear resistance gene(s) R5 and/or R8. In the international literature there are no references available about mapping the R5 and R8 loci. The aim of this research project is the identification of RAPD markers linked to the resistance, conversion of the markers into SCAR markers, and finally the use of SCAR markers in the creation of a linkage map. In the future this map can be utilised for the isolation of the resistance gene(s), and the markers by increasing the efficiency of the selection process can help in the breeding of new varieties having resistance to late blight.
