Abstract
One of the groups of the Avars occupying the Carpathian Basin in 568, settled at the territory east of river Tisza between rivers Körös and Maros. One of the characteristic burial rites of this ethnic group is a special type of catacomb grave that, according to our present knowledge, have no direct eastern antecedents. In the course of our work we evaluate the find materials and burial customs of catacomb graves and the early avar cemetery of Szegvár-Oromdûlõ excavated by Gábor Lõrinczy between 1980 and 1997, and tried to make a chronology, partly differing from the classical one, on the basis of new finds, radiocarbon dating and archeogenetical examinations.
