Abstract
Brachiopods gradually surpassed in the marine benthic assemblages from the Cretaceous to the Recent but sometimes they play very significant role in the Tertiary fossil faunas. Up to now, geologists and paleontologists have mainly collected the larger specimens from harder, calcareous rocks. The small-sized, so-called micromorph brachiopods were neglected in Hungary. However, they may be present in significant number in the softer, washable formations. On the basis of the expediently performed research in foreign countries, the Tertiary and Recent formations yielded micromorph brachiopods in large number. The first aim of this project is the revision of the Cretaceous and Tertiary fossil brachiopod materials in the significant Hungarian collections. However, the main purpose of the project is the execution of new collections at different localities to obtain micromorph brachiopods by washing method. The research concentrates mainly on Hungarian localities but there are some reasonable exception (Paleocene brachiopods from Austria, the famous Transylvanian Miocene localities). significant part of the research will done in co-operation with dr. Maria Aleksandra Bitner (Institute of Paleobiology, Polish Academy of Sciences).
