Abstract
The camomile (Matricaria recutita L) is a medicinal plant of great traditions in Hungary. It is known world-wide as an 'Hungaricum' which was supported by the intensive scientific activities carried out between 1960 and 1980 in Hungary. The results of these activities were summarised in 'Camomile' volume as a part of the series of Hungarian Flora of Cultivated Plants. As a matter of fact since the time of the publication in connection of camomile no considerable results were achieved in Hungary. In contrast, many new international projects have been started recently, to discover new chemical compounds and biological activities. From the other hand the lack of updated knowledge on natural populations of camomile became a limitative factor for firms and individual persons being interested in collection of plant. Based on the new scientific results intensive selection work on camomile has been started in many countries, including Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Poland. Projects were oriented to get new chemotypes, isolate compounds of high biological activity, to work out new methods of isolation as well as to know much more about the genetics and chemism of plants. By this present project we want to widen our knowledge on this species again. Our idea is to strengthening our international position on this field and to accelerate both utilisation and reservation of Hungarian genetic background of camomile.
