Abstract
Beef production mostly for export purposes was very important in Hungary during the whole history of the country. In the 14th through 18th centuries the Hungarian Grey and from the 19th century to the middle of 1970s the Hungarian Simmental was the main breed. In 1972 the Hungarian Government decided on new direction, as a specialization in cattle husbandry. From that time specialized dairy and beef breeds were imported. The number of beef cattle increased, attained 100.000 cows in the early eighties. Later on the herd started to decrease, today only 23.000 remained. Hungary is going to join the European Community. When EU member is beef cattle breeding will get into better position among the different branches of agriculture. For the development of beef cattle breeding methods research have to be continued for more theoretical and practical knowledge. The purpose of the project is to contribute to the development by his new results.
