Abstract
Nowadays we have to face up to the fact that a drastic decrease of terrestrial biodiversity caused mainly by human impact is being recorded. One of the most suitable means for the approach of understanding and modelling processes and of the development of terrestrial ecosystems during Earth history is palaeobotany providing abundant fossil remains of the former terrestrial living world. From that point of view the Inner Carpathian Region deserves attention: abundant and well-preserved fossil floras suitable for both environment and climate reconstructions are available from the Oligocene of this region. On the other hand, providing an approach from another point of view accurate results of tectonic and palaeogeographical investigations are at our disposal. Thus, our palaeobotanical, morphometrical, ecological, climatological and taphonomical investigations completed with the results of tectonics and palaeogeography are aiming at providing a complex and detailed reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment and ecosystems of the Oligocene at the Inner Carpathian Region.
