Abstract
Community studies of small mammals have revealed that the diversity of a community is positively correlated with habitat structure, and it is the habitat selection that separates small mammal populations living in the same place and ensures their proper functioning. Biodiversity monitoring programmes were started in Hungary at the end of the 1990s. Still, few Hungarian case studies have been performed on small mammal communities, especially on Microtus oeconomus. The Hungarian subspecies of the root vole, named Microtus oeconomus méhelyi (Éhik, 1928) is protected in Hungary since 1974, included into Hungarian RedBook and strongly protected since 2001. Isolated populations of root vole (Microtus oeconomus) in Hungary are regarded as relict populations from the last glacial periods presenting the most Southern distribution of this holarctic species. There are three distinct regions with scattered populations of root voles such as areas of Fertõ-Hanság, Szigetköz and Lake Balaton.
