Abstract
The common hamster (Cricetus cricetus) and the Mound-building mouse (Mus spicilegus) are very important indicator-species of the agricultural lands. Their habits and presence reflect very well to the changing of the agricultural methods. The investigation of population-ecology and metapopulation structure of these rodents are in the focus of the project. The exact species ranges and population sizes of these species in Hungary are not known. At the end of the project we will present an accurate range-map. The common hamster is a characteristic species of the agricultural landscape and the steppe of the Hungarian Great-plain cold Pannonicum, whose connections of the populations will be investigated by DNA analysis. The store building habit, the territoriality and social structure of the mound-building mouse are very interesting, but the detailed investigation of them did not happened. After finishing the project we will know more about the ecology of these rodents and we will able to give suggestions for the plant protection experts. We also hope that the research help to save these species.
