Abstract
The Madagascan coastlines offer a major ecologic and economic interest for sustainable development in Madagascar and the region of the Indian Ocean. Their preservation is essential. At present they are seriously endangered by natural phenomena but also by human activities. These facts generate/raise questions concerning the urgency and the necessity to set up management methods appropriate to coastline areas: what about the possibility to set up integrated management for Madagascan coastlines, and which are the methods of follow-up / evaluation that it would be relevant to establish in order to succeed in the protection of coastlines and particularly in sustainable development? In order to answer these questions, this study is based on a systemic type of approach that favours the consideration of different scales on which considerable interactions take place between biodiversity components, social organization methods, public policy (international and national), local forms of governing and economic activities for added value. The present project will study in a comparative way the coastline biodiversity of two typical Madagascan regions (East and Southwest of the island). It should also provide a greater knowledge as regards the characteristics of Madagascan ecosystems and their management methods. It will also permit to reinforce local capacities through classes offered to students in certificate courses (Master, PhD, post-doctoral studies) within various domains (law, social science, environmental science, modelling…). Finally, throughout this study publications will disseminate and add value to the different findings. They will systematically be introduced during programmed seminars, and be at the disposal of policymakers in order to reinforce scientific bases as regards Madagascan as well as regional environmental policies (Indian Ocean region).
