Abstract
Soil biodiversity is crucial for the sustainable functioning of terrestrial ecosystems and should be protected according to the Biodiversity Convention. However, European biodiversity protection measures are lacking a soil biodiversity focus. CONSIDER will evaluate methods for conserving soil biodiversity in relation to major threats and mitigation activities, by convening four workshops involving European specialists from a wide range of disciplines. Two additional workshops will focus on synthesis, and involve end users and stake holders. The workshops form a matrix structure with workpackages, each focused on a key driver of soil biodiversity. Project management and dissemination are part of a separate work package. CONSIDER provides an overview of the effects of human- induced global changes (fragmentation and climate change) and mitigation strategies (land conversion and user-friendly agriculture) on soil biodiversity in Europe.
