Abstract
We analyse the role of 5 highly endangered European butterflies of the Habitats Directive, Bern Convention and European Red Lists as indicators for grassland biodiversity, and their use as tools for prescribing management to sites. Research in 8 countries spans the entire European range of each species, different biogeographically conditions and population structures. We provide users in EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) with simple robust tools for assessing the effect of land use changes on the persistence of endangered communities of wildlife. This will involve a unique standardisation of approaches and applications across Europe. Subcontractors (National Parks, EIA consultants) will test our recommendations.
