Abstract
The project will provide a phylogeny of Eurasian beaver from populations over its whole range. Thus the significance of current taxonomic treatments can be assessed. Depending on the depth of phylogenetic divergence this will allow the definition of conservational units. From the phylogeographic patterns potential source populations of future translocations will be suggested. The implementation of DNA sequencing methods at our research group will broaden our spectrum of methods for genetic analyses. In the research group one full time permanent position is occupied with a population geneticist who, together with two half-time technicians will be able to absorb technically and analytically the new competence. Future applications relevant for the research group include intraspecific phylogeography of rare and endangered plant and animal species (Cottus gobio, Corrigiola litoralis, Astragalus exscapus, previously studied with allozymes) and higher taxon phylogeny (genus Maculinea (Lepidoptera), genus Macrotermis (Isoptera, Macrotermitidae)).
