Abstract
Summary Objective: – Map potential VMEs which may occur in the NAFO Regulatory Area at depths less than 2000 m. – Study the distribution of fishing effort in the NAFO Regulatory Area. – Propose the closure of sensitive areas to bottom fisheries. Studies on vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) are an important aspect of RFMO compliance with UNGA Resolution 61/105. Key Customer Purpose: Spain announced at the last NAFO September 2008 meeting its intention to begin next summer 2009 a study aimed to map the potential VMEs that may exist in the NAFO Regulatory Area at depths shallower than 2000 m. Embarking on scientific research in this area would enhance our international reputation in the practical aspects of the implementation of the UN resolution.
