Abstract
This project requires a review, collation and analysis of bird population and distribution data, which will then be used to further support, outside this contract, the development and application of guidance and principles as part of a targeted review of the current UK network of terrestrial and coastal Special Protection Areas (SPAs). It specifically includes: (i) collation of published population counts that will help inform judgements on the sufficiency of existing site networks; (ii) a collation of data to help assess the provision of sites for selected species; (iii) identification of evidence gaps and solutions; (iii) development of a decision tree to help assess the potential inclusion of cropped habitats within SPAs; and (iv) a linked collation of information on avian aspects of the UK Ramsar network. The information gathered under this contract will be used outside the contract by government and its statutory agencies to review the SPA network
