Abstract
The Environment Change Network (ECN) is a network of 12 terrestrial and 45 freshwater long term monitoring sites across the UK. The ECN was established 1993 and measures 260 environmental variables according to standard protocols. This long term, multi-variate data set increases with value as the time series expands. There are 14 sponsoring organisations, including Defra, the Devolved Administration and respective agencies, and the research councils (NERC and BBSRC). The ECN is part of wider European and global long term environmental monitoring networks. Defra has contributed to the ECN by the funding of a site at Drayton (funded by FFG) and by co-funding with NERC the central (data) coordination unit based (ECN CCU) at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.
