Abstract
Summary Objectives: To produce the necessary tools to determine the economically optimal level of exploitation of European ecosystems under changing climatic conditions, while also ensuring that the pressure exerted on both commercial stocks and susceptible fish species is biologically sustainable. the study will focus on aspects concerning the safeguarding of susceptible species. The effect of technical interactions in the fishing process on bycatch of non-target species will be assessed by identifying susceptible species and determining the information required to develop management plans. The maximum level of fishing effort consistent with sustaining the population status of these species will be estimated along with the effect of discard of bycatch on economic yield. Key Customer Purpose: Options for protecting non-target species will be evaluated using Management Strategy Evaluation in order to develop robust management options. Management strategy evaluation (MSE) involves assessing the consequences of a range of management strategies or options and presenting the results in a way which lays bare the tradeoffs in performance across a range of management objectives. It seeks to provide the decision maker with the information on which to base a rational decision, given their objectives, preferences, and attitudes to risk.
